Farewell to Nova Scotia from the
Adventure Bug Victor
Hello Cape Breton, Newfoundland and
Labrador!
Chris and Elayne Clash from Melbourne
Australia have been driving around the world for the last two years.
They have been through 39 countries - through Asia – from South
Korea across Mongolia, Russia, then visiting nearly all the 'stans'.
Into Europe, through the Middle East, North Africa, then up through
Scandinavia, and over to Iceland. Often doubling back to stay with
someone they have met or just to do it differently. A journey of
nearly 71,000 kilometres.
Now after staying in Nova Scotia to
take delivery of their Adventure Bug – shipped over from Liverpool
England – and making new friends! - they are on the road again.
The next leg of their journey will take
them from Labrador into Quebec and on across Canada, probably staying
north across most of the provinces.
The buggy was made out of all
recyclable parts and materials – nothing was bought new. The frame
made out of bull bars – used on vehicles in Australia to deflect
kangaroos. There are no doors but zip up plastic windows and no
heater!
They sleep in a tent on top of the
vehicle – this keeps them out of the way of creepy crawlies, and
can be almost instantly erected.
The vehicle was designed by Chris and
built by them both with the help of friends.
The question to all long distance
travellers is – why?
The Clash's answered in this way - we
just want to meet people.
They explained that they felt the world
is a fragile place, much of it is being trashed by the way we live
and treat the planet. They want to prove to themselves and perhaps
others that aspirations to a consumer-led life just create bigger
landfill sites and a poisoned earth.
Many of us live in fear of our
neighbours – suspicious and mistrusting of cultures and attitudes –
the Clash's want to experience first hand what it is like to engage
with ordinary people on an up close and personal level. They have
been humbled and grateful to many people on their travels who have
been overwhelmingly kind and generous.
Elayne and Chris will continue their
journey across Canada into Alaska and down to the United States of
America. They hope to visit Central America and South America, and
then leave this continent and ship the buggy over to Africa.
They have no impelling timescale –
much of their journey is about who they meet, and about the challenge
of the terrain and roads (sometimes - what roads?!).
If they get a great view that is a
bonus.
How do we know all this? – because
Chris and Elayne stayed with our family while they were in Nova
Scotia. We had the privilege to be part of their journey and now they
are part of ours.
Good luck Adventure Bug Victor – bon
voyage Chris and Elayne.
While in Nova Scotia Elayne and Chris
stayed in West Chezzetcook, on the Eastern Shore.
Elayne and Chris visited Lakeview
School Porters Lake. They attended the presentation of the Grade 5's
Nations of the World Project – they were very interested and
complimentary about the amount of work the children had put into
their individual projects – representing many countries of the
world including the delicious food!
Elayne and Chris had visited a number
of these countries and chatted to many of the young people who knew a
lot about their chosen countries – some having been born there and
moved to Canada.
A great deal of work and research has
been done by these 5th Graders and they are a credit to
their school and teachers.
A week later when the Adventure Bug
arrived by ship from Liverpool, England – Elayne and Chris took the
buggy to Lakeview School.
They showed the 5th Grade
what it was like to travel in the buggy and how they slept in the
tent on top.
They then went to the classroom where
they had a very interesting question session with Chris and Elayne.
The children showing how interested they were about cultures and
countries around the world and asking many informed questions.
